Irish prayer can often sound more beautiful in Gaelic. I have put together a collection of prayers in both Irish Gaelic and English and include prayers for weddings and funerals. Devotion to Mary, Mother of God remains very strong in Ireland and I have a included a number of prayers in this category.

Most common Gaelic and Irish Prayers

COMHARTHA NA CROISE

In ainm an Athar agus an Mhic agus an Spioraid Naoimh. Amen.

SIGN OF THE CROSS

In the name of the Father and the the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

ÁR nATHAIR

Ár nAthair,
atá ar neamh,
go naomhaítear d'ainm.
Go dtaga do ríocht.
Go ndéantar do thoil ar an talamh mar a dhéantar ar neamh.
Ár n-arán laethúil tabhair dúinn inniu
agus maith dúinn ar bhfiacha
mar a mhaithimidne dár bhfeichiúna féin;
agus ná lig sinn i gcathú,
ach saor sinn ó olc. Amen

THE LORD'S PRAYER

Our Father,
Who art in Heaven,
Hallowed be Thy Name.
Thy kingdom come,
Thy Will be done on earth as it is in Heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.Amen

SÉ DO BHEATHA

Sé do bheatha a Mhuire,
atá lán de ghrásta;
tá an Tiarna leat,
is beannaithe thú idir mná
agus is beannaithe toradh do bhroinne, Íosa.
A Naomh Mhuire, a mhathair Dé,
guigh orainn na peacaigh, anois agus ar uair ár mbáis. Amen.

HAIL MARY PRAYER

Hail Mary,
Full of Grace,
The Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women,
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God,
pray for us sinners now,
and at the hour of our death. Amen

GLÓIR DON ATHAIR

Glóir don Athair,
agus don Mhac,
agus don Spiorad Naomh.
Mar a bhí ar dtús,
mar atá fós,
agus mar a bheidh go brách,
le saol na saol. Amen.

THE GLORY BE

Glory be to the Father,
and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning,
is now,
and ever shall be,
world without end. Amen.

CRÉ NA nASPAL

Creidim i nDia, an tAthair uilechumhachtach,
cruthaitheoir neimhe agus talún;
agus in Íosa Críost,
a aon mhacsan, ár dTiarna,
a gabhadh on Spiorad Naomh,
a rugadh ó Mhuire Ógh;
a d'fhulaing páis faoi Phontius Píoláit,
a céasadh ar chrois, a fuair bás agus a adhlacadh;
a chuaigh síos go hifreann,
a d'éirigh an treas lá ó mhairbh;
a chuaigh suas ar neamh;
atá ina shuí ar dheis Dé,
an tAthair uilechumhachtach ;
as sin tiocfaidh sé chun breithiúnas a thabhairt
ar bheo agus ar mhairbh.
Creidim sa Spiorad Naomh,
sa NaomhEaglais Chaitliceach,
i gcomaoin na naomh;
i maithiúnas na bpeacaí,
in aiséirí na colainne,
agus sa bheatha shíoraí. Amen.

THE APOSTLES CREED

I believe in God, the Father almighty,
Creator of heaven and earth,
and in Jesus Christ,
His only Son, our Lord
He was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
and born of the Virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died and was buried.
He descended into hell.
On the third day He rose again,
He ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand
of God the Father Almighty.
He will come again to judge
the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Holy Catholic Church,
the Communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and life everlasting. Amen.

Agus gabh sí ón Spiorad Naomh.

Agus ghlac an Briathar colainn dhaonna, agus chónaigh sé inár measc.

Sé do bheatha, a Mhuire, etc.

Guigh orainn, a Naomh-Mháthair Dé, Ionas go mb’fhiú sinn geallúna Chríost.

Dóirt anuas, impímid, a Thiarna, do ghrásta inár gcroíthe, ionas,

Sinne a fuair fios, trí scéala an aingil,
Ar theacht Íosa Críost do Mhac i gcolainn dhaonna, go dtiocfaimis,

Irish Prayer in English

The Angelus

The Angel of the Lord declared unto Mary:
And she conceived of the Holy Spirit.

Hail Mary full of grace etc (See Hail Mary Prayer above)

Behold the handmaid of the Lord: Be it done unto me according to Thy Word.

Hail Mary full of grace etc (See Hail Mary Prayer above)

And the Word was made Flesh: And dwelt amongst us.

Hail Mary full of grace etc (See Hail Mary Prayer above)

Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God, that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let us pray:
Pour forth, we beseech Thee, O Lord, Thy grace into our hearts that we, to whom the incarnation of Christ, Your Son,
was made known by the message of an angel, may by His Passion and Cross
be brought to the glory of His Resurrection,
through the same Christ Our Lord.Amen

AN MAGNIFICAT

Mórann m’anam an Tiarna, agus rinne mo spiorad gairdeas i nDia, mo shláinaitheoir;
Óir dhearc sé le fabhar ar ísle a bhanóglaigh, Mar féach, déarfaidh na glúine uile feasta gur méanar dom.

Óir rinne an Té atá cumhachtach nithe móra dom
agus is naofa a ainm.
Agus tá a thrócaire ó ghlúin go glúin,
dóibh seo ar a mbíonn a eagla.

Thaispeáin sé neart a láimhe.
Scaip sé an dream a bhí uaibhreach i smaointe a gcroí.
Leag sé prionsaí óna gcathaoireacha
agus d’ardaigh se daoine ísle.
Líon sé lucht an ocrais le nithe maithe
agus chuir sé na saibhre uaidh folamh.

D’fhóir sé ar Iosrael, a sheirbhíseach, ag cuimhneamh dó ar a thrócaire

de réir mar a gheall sé dár n-aithreacha, d’Abráhám agus dá shliocht go brách.
Glóir don Athair agus don mhac agus don Spiorad Naomh; mar a bhí ar dtús, mar atá anois agus mar a bhéas go brách le saol na saol. Amen.

MAGNIFICAT

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,
my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour,
for he has looked with
favour on his lowly servant,
and from this day all generations will call me blessed.

The Almighty has done great things for me:
holy is his Name.
He has mercy on those who fear him
in every generation.

He has shown the strength of his arm
he has scattered the proud in their conceit.
He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,
and has lifted up the lowly.
He has filled the hungry with good things,
and has sent the rich away empty.

He has come to the help of his servant Israel
for he has remembered his promise of mercy,
the promise he made to our fathers,
to Abraham and his children for ever.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirat, as it was in the beginning, is now and forever shall be. Amen.

REGINA COELI (IN AM CÁSCA)

Déan gairdeas, a Bhanríon na bhflaitheas, alleluia,
Óir an Té arbh fhiú thú é a iompar, alleluia.
D’aiséirigh sé mar a dúirt, alleluia,
Guigh orainn chun Dé, alleluia.
R. Déan áthas agus gairdeas, a Mhaighdean Mhuire, alleluia,
F. Óir d’éirigh an Tiarna go fíor, alleluia.

V. Rejoice and be glad, O Virgin Mary. Alleluia.
R. Because the Lord is truly risen, Alleluia.

Guímis
A Dhia a dheonaigh áthas a thabhairt don domhan trí aiséirí do Mhic,
Ár dTiarna Íosa Críost, tabhair dúinn, impímid ort, trí idirghuí na Maighdine Muire, a Mháthair, go bhfaighimis gairdeas na beatha síoraí.
Tríd an gCríost céanna ár dTiarna. Amen.

Let us pray
O God, Who by the Resurrection of Thy Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, hast been pleased to give joy to the whole world, grant we beseech Thee, that through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, His Mother, we may attain the joys of eternal life. Through the same Christ, our Lord. Amen.

AN SALVE REGINA

Go mbeannaíthear duit, a Bhanríon, a Mháthair na trócaire,
ár mbeatha, ár milseacht agus ár ndóchas, go mbeannaíthear duit.
Is ort a ghlaoimid, clann dhíbeartha Éabha.
Is chugat a chuirimid suas ár n-urnaí, Ag caoineadh agus ag gol, sa ghleann seo na ndeor.
Ar an ábhar sin, ós tú ár n-abhcóide,
iompaigh orainn do shúile atá lán de thrua, agus taréis na deoraíochta seo taispeáin dúinn Íosa, toradh beannaithe do bhroinne, A Mhaighdean Mhuire cheansa, ghrámhar, mhilis,
Guigh orainn a Naomh-Mháthair Dé,
Ionas go mb’fhiú sinn geallúna Chríost.

HAIL HOLY QUEEN

Hail, Holy Queen, mother of mercy,
hail our life, our sweetness and our hope.
To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve.
To thee do we send up our sighs
mourning and weeping in this valley of tears.
Turn then, most gracious advocate,
thine eyes of mercy toward us, and after this our exile
show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.
Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God,
That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.Amen

AN MEMORARE

Cuimhnigh, a Mhaighdean Mhuire róghrámhar,
Nár chualathas trácht ar éinne riamh a chuir é féin faoi do choimirce ná a d’iarr cabhair ort ná a d’impigh d’idirghuí is gur theip tú air.
Lán de mhuinín asat, dá bhrí sin, rithimse chugat, a Mhaighdean na maighdean is a Mháthair.
Is chugatsa a thagaim, is os do chomhair a sheasaim, i mo pheacach bocht atuirseach.
Ó a Mháthair an AonMhic, ná diúltaigh do m’urnaithe ach éist leo go trócaireach agus freagair iad. Amen.

MEMORARE

REMEMBER, O most gracious Virgin Mary,
that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thy intercession was left unaided.
Inspired with this confidence, I fly to thee, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother;
to thee do I come; before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful.

O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen.

Irish Prayer in Gaelic

Go n-éirí Dia is bhur bpósadh libh.

Mar gheall air sin, fágfaidh duine a athair agus a mháthair chun bheith go dlúth i bpáirt lena bhean, agus aon cholainn amháin a bheidh sa bheirt acu.' Dá réir sin, ní beirt iad feasta ach aon cholainn amháin. Dá bhrí sin, an ní a cheangail Dia ná scaoileadh duine é (Marta 19:5-6)

Irish Prayer in English

May God and your marriage bring you joy.

For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh'. So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate. (Matthew 19:5-6,)

A chlann dhílis Dé, tá sibh tar éis teacht go dtí an eaglais seo chun go mbuailfeadh Dia séala naofa ar bhur ngrá i láthair an tsagairt agus an phobail seo.
Is cuing naofa é an pósadh Críostaí agus cuireann sé bláth ar an ngrá nádúrtha. Ceanglaíonn sé orthu siúd a bhíonn páirteach ann bheith dílis dá chéile go deo.
Bunaíonn sé eatarthu ceangal a mhaireann ar feadh a saoil agus nach féidir a bhriseadh.
Éilíonn sé go mbeadh grá agus meas acu ar a chéile, (go nglacfaidís ó Dhia le cibé leanaí a bhronnfadh sé orthu agus go dtógfaidís iad i ngrá Dé).
Mar chabhair dóibh ina bpósadh dáiltear ar an lánúin grásta buanseasmhach na sacraiminte.

Beloved children of God, you have come to this church for God to put his holy seal on your love in the presence of the priest and this congregation.
Christian marriage is a holy bond, and it beautifies natural love.
It binds those who take part in it to be faithful to one another for ever.

It creates a bond between them which lasts for life and which cannot be broken.
It requires that they love and respect one another (and that they accept from God any children whom He bestows upon them and raise them in the love of God).
As an assistance to them in their marriage, the lasting grace of the sacrament is bestowed upon the couple.

Fad ar do shaoil agus laethanta geala is nár fhágair an saol seo go mbréagfar do leanbh.

May you have a long life and days of sunshine, and may you not leave this life till your child falls in love.

Guímis ar ár ngaolta atá marbh agus orthu siúd go léir a bhí go maith dúinn. Go bhfáiltí Dia rompu isteach sa solas soilseach ina láthair féin.

A Thiarna éist linn.

A Thiarna bí ceansa agus éist linn
